A message from US special Envoy for Syria Daniel Rubinstein, commemorating the 4th anniversary of the Syrian revolution

March 12, 2015

“Hello…I am Daniel Rubinstein, the U.S. Special Envoy for Syria.  On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of the Syrian revolution, we are reminded of the sincere aspirations of the Syrian people: freedom and dignity.  We are reminded of the brave men and women who stand up to tyranny to demand justice, despite the dangers they face. We are reminded of the unity and strength of the Syrian people.  For four years, the Asad regime has answered Syrians’ calls for freedom and reform with brutality, authoritarianism, and destruction.  Asad’s desperation to cling to power through daily terror reminds us all that he has long lost legitimacy and he must give way for a real political transition.  Syria can never be stable under a tyrant whose regime has displaced, detained, tortured, barrel bombed, gassed, maimed, injured, and killed so many innocent men, women, and children.

As we mark this somber occasion, let us remember all those who have suffered.  Let us recognize that the courageous Syrian people – and neither a dictator nor foreign fighters – must determine their future.  And let us honor all those who have sacrificed and who continue to struggle for peace, tolerance, and prosperity in Syria.  This week is indeed an important reminder for all of us of the urgent work that still lies ahead – and the United States will stand with you.  Thank you.”
